In the Suntarsky ulus of Yakutia, the family of 85-year-old Larisa Afanasyeva is harvesting large crops of cucumbers in a makeshift greenhouse. Every year, the villagers grow about 2 tons of green goods. The collection is sold at the local market, YSIA writes.
The farm is located 10 kilometers from the village of Suntar. The greenhouse appeared back in 1995, it was built by the husband of a Yakut woman. The design feature is that it is partially underground, which protects vegetables from frost and the hot sun. Cucumbers of the Stella variety are grown in it. The main fertilizer is cow dung.
“Thanks to the heating system, we start planting cucumbers in April and we get a harvest from May to the end of September. With temperature fluctuations at night, we heat the stove every 3 hours,” shared Larisa Afanasyeva.
Cucumber harvest – it is removed every two days, goes to the local market in the village of Suntar. Trade is handled by Sardana Afanasyeva. The first June cucumbers cost 350-380 rubles, and the July ones go for 150 rubles per kilogram.
The farm also cultivates potatoes, carrots, zucchini, cabbage and tomatoes. Tomatoes grow in the open field; annually, the Afanasyevs harvest more than 500 kilograms of tomatoes.
Suntar farmers plan to expand and build another greenhouse on their land.
