In recent years, tomato farming has seen impressive advancements, with high-yield varieties becoming increasingly popular among farmers. These varieties not only offer large harvests but also provide disease resistance and quicker growing times. Farmers in West Champaran, Bihar, for example, are leading the way, growing varieties that can yield up to 800 quintals per hectare. This article highlights some of the most productive and resilient tomato varieties that are helping farmers increase their profitability.

High-Yielding Tomato Varieties

  1. Kashi Vishesh
One of the most reliable tomato varieties, Kashi Vishesh is known for its resistance to the notorious leaf curl virus, a common disease affecting tomato crops. The medium-sized, round, bright red fruits weigh about 80 grams each and can be harvested within 70-75 days. This variety yields an impressive 400-450 quintals per hectare, making it a popular choice among farmers looking for early returns on their investment.
  2. Kashi Amrit
Kashi Amrit is another disease-resistant variety, particularly against the tobacco leaf curl virus. With slightly larger fruits weighing about 108 grams each, it can produce up to 620 quintals per hectare. This variety is well-suited for the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, where farmers have reported high success rates.
  3. Kashi Abhimani
Known for its durability during transport, Kashi Abhimani offers fruits that weigh between 75-95 grams each. This variety is particularly favored by farmers in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Its resistance to leaf curl virus and its longer shelf life make it ideal for markets that require long-distance shipping.
  4. Arka Vishesh
For farmers focusing on tomato-based products like purée, paste, ketchup, and sauces, Arka Vishesh is a top choice. This variety yields between 750 and 800 quintals per hectare, with each fruit weighing around 70-75 grams. Its high yield and suitability for processing industries make it a valuable option for commercial tomato farming.
  5. Arka Rakshak
One of the most disease-resistant varieties, Arka Rakshak is resistant to three major tomato diseases: leaf curl virus, bacterial wilt, and early blight. The fruits, which weigh between 75-100 grams, are harvested after 130-140 days. This variety can produce up to 80 tons (800 quintals) per hectare, making it one of the highest-yielding tomatoes currently available. Its resistance to multiple diseases and high yield potential make it a favorite among farmers seeking long-term productivity.

Benefits of Choosing the Right Tomato Variety

Selecting the appropriate variety for specific growing conditions is critical for maximizing yield and reducing losses due to disease. Disease-resistant varieties not only reduce the need for chemical interventions but also save on costs while promoting sustainable farming practices. With shorter harvest cycles in some varieties, farmers can enjoy quicker returns and potentially grow multiple crops in a year.

Additionally, choosing varieties like Arka Vishesh and Arka Rakshak, which are suitable for processing industries, can open up opportunities for farmers to tap into the growing demand for processed tomato products. This diversifies income streams and shields farmers from market volatility.

Tomato farmers across regions such as West Champaran are increasingly turning to high-yielding, disease-resistant varieties to boost their productivity and profits. With options like Kashi Vishesh for early harvests and Arka Rakshak for extended crop cycles, farmers can tailor their choice of variety to suit their climate, market demands, and farming goals. By adopting these advanced varieties, farmers can achieve higher yields, better disease control, and improved market access, setting themselves up for long-term success.
