In a bold step toward modernizing its agricultural sector, Armenia has unveiled a €9 million greenhouse complex built with government subsidies and financing from a local bank. Located at an altitude of 1,415 meters above sea level, the facility leverages the region’s abundant sunshine to grow high-quality produce.

The project was inaugurated by Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan and Deputy Minister Arman Khojoyan, highlighting its significance as a driver of agricultural innovation and rural economic development.

Cutting-Edge Technology for High-Yield Farming

Equipped with French technology and designed to European standards, the greenhouse incorporates automated microclimate control systems. These systems regulate temperature, humidity, and light levels, creating optimal growing conditions year-round.

The initial phase covers 5 hectares, where 177,000 pepper seedlings are currently being cultivated. The first harvest is expected in February 2025. With plans to expand to 18 hectares, the facility aims to produce over 5,000 tons of fruits and vegetables annually, meeting both domestic and international demand.

Expanding Export Opportunities

Currently, the greenhouse has a production capacity of 1,500 tons per year. While the domestic market will benefit, the majority of the produce will be exported to Russia, with future expansions targeting the UAE and European markets. This aligns with Armenia’s broader strategy to diversify its agricultural exports and integrate into global supply chains.

Economic and Social Benefits

The project has already created employment for 60 individuals, with plans to increase the workforce to 250 as operations expand. This is a significant contribution to rural communities, providing stable incomes and fostering local development. Minister Papoyan emphasized that projects like this are crucial for ensuring economic stability and improving living standards in rural areas.

The Role of Government Support

The Armenian government’s subsidies and policy frameworks were instrumental in the development of this project. By prioritizing modern agricultural technologies and export-oriented production, the government aims to replicate this model across the country, boosting Armenia’s standing in the global agricultural market.

The opening of this €9 million greenhouse complex marks a significant milestone in Armenia’s agricultural journey. With its advanced technology, high production capacity, and commitment to social impact, the project is a testament to how innovation can transform traditional farming practices. As the facility scales up, it not only promises economic growth but also positions Armenia as a competitive player in the global agriculture industry.
