The Russian greenhouse industry is actively striving for full import substitution. At the end of 2021, the level of self-sufficiency in greenhouse vegetables reached 71.7% percent, and this figure is growing every year. By 2023 should reach 81%.

“In the first half of the year, vegetable growers had to work in the new economic conditions of market instability, rebuild their usual production processes, look for new logistics solutions. Despite certain difficulties – the growth in the cost of vegetables, Russian greenhouse farms were able to increase their production. State support measures played a significant role in this – preferential investment loans and stimulating subsidies, – commented Natalia Rogova, General Director of the Association “Greenhouses of Russia”.

In the first half of the year, more than 820,000 tons of vegetables and herbs were harvested indoors, which is 5.6% more than in the same period in 2021. Most of them are cucumbers (almost 500 thousand tons, 3.4% more than the same period last year) and tomatoes (308 thousand tons, 9.1%).

The leading regions in the production of greenhouse vegetables remain the same as at the beginning of the year: Lipetsk, Moscow, Kaluga, Volgograd, Belgorod, Novosibirsk regions, Stavropol and Krasnodar regions, the Republic of Bashkortostan, the Republic of Tatarstan and the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.

Starting from this year, a new mechanism for compensating direct costs incurred for the creation of greenhouse complexes in the Far East began to operate, which will increase the provision of the population with vegetables during the off-season.

The Association “Greenhouses of Russia” represents and defends the interests of greenhouse enterprises and mushroom growing complexes in government bodies, assists in the study and implementation of scientific research achievements and in training personnel at protected ground enterprises. The Association includes more than 200 enterprises, including greenhouse plants for the production of vegetables and flowers, mushroom growing enterprises, as well as institutes, domestic and foreign organizations working in the field of protected ground.
