In an era where food safety and sustainability are paramount, Zhuhai’s “Haojihui” organic vegetable farm has set a new benchmark. By leveraging advanced soilless cultivation techniques, this farm has achieved China’s organic certification and the prestigious USDA 100% Organic Certification—making it the only soilless farm in China to earn such recognition.

How It Works: Zero Pesticides, Zero Synthetic Fertilizers

The farm, led by Macau entrepreneur Sun Zhenhong, uses a hydroponic floating raft system. Vegetables grow in 20 cm-deep water channels, with roots submerged in nutrient-rich, fermented bio-solutions derived from organic matter. This eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers while ensuring optimal plant nutrition.

To combat pests without pesticides, the farm employs a six-layer defense system:

  1. Protective netting to block insects

  2. Pheromone traps to lure and capture pests

  3. UV light traps for nocturnal insects

  4. Sticky traps for flying pests

  5. Beneficial microbial sprays to repel harmful insects

  6. Manual inspections to remove infested plants

This zero-chemical approach ensures no toxic residues, meeting the strictest organic standards in both China and the US.

From Farm to Table in 24 Hours – Supplying Hong Kong & Macau

The farm’s highly efficient post-harvest process ensures freshness:

  • Vegetables are harvested via water channels to minimize handling.

  • They are trimmed, packed, and stored at 3–8°C within hours.

  • Deliveries reach Macau and Hong Kong within 24 hours, supplying high-end resorts like The Venetian, Galaxy, and Wynn Palace.

Currently, the farm produces 6 tons of vegetables monthly, including romaine lettuce, kale, and butterhead lettuce, with plans to expand into mainland China after final certification in August 2024.

The Future: Expansion & Agri-Education

With 50 acres of land (only 10 acres currently developed), Sun Zhenhong plans to:

  • Launch Phase 2 in late 2024, integrating eco-tourism and agricultural education.

  • Host free student workshops to promote modern farming techniques across the Greater Bay Area.

A Model for Sustainable Agriculture

The success of Haojihui Organic Farm proves that soilless, chemical-free farming can meet the highest global organic standards. As demand for safe, sustainable produce grows, this model offers a blueprint for future farms—combining innovation, environmental stewardship, and profitability.
