Pepperstorm F1, the strong and productive grafting for sweet pepper

Fenix proposes a new grafting for sweet peppers crops, which improves the quality of the fruits. We’re talking about Pepperstorm F1, a sweet pepper intraspecific hybrid (Capsicum annuum L. X Capsicum anuum L.) characterized by the strong, productive push it brings to the plant. It can suit with different sweet pepper varieties, and it is particularly suggested for Autumn-Winter transplants: it overcomes well stress due to weather conditions, and it brings a positive influence on the quality of fruits, increasing peel thickness considerably.

Pepperstorm 1Pepperstorm F1 maintains unaltered shape and color, brilliance, and quality of the fruits of the scion

Thanks to the intraspecific naturePepperstormguarantees high and uniform germinability when sowed (in nurseries) and high yield at the graft. Between the main features, the Phytophthora capsici resistance, the root rot agent, and harmful phytopathogen are the reason for wilting and rot in sweet peppers.

Why choosing sweet pepper grafting
Pepperstorm F1, with its features, corresponds perfectly with the philosophy that Fenix wants to bring on the field with the use of intraspecific hybrids as the key to overcoming several disaffinities of grafted plants. These ones become increasingly necessary year after year, especially within protected crops when it is more difficult to find and apply an efficient rounding. So the repeating of the same species or family is the reason for the multiplication of dangerous pathogens like the root rot for the sweet pepper.

Pepperstorm 2On the left, grafting on Pepperstorm F1 is very homogeneous; on the right commercial variety witness

Despite the growing need to graft crops today, a major limitation to the spread of grafting on peppers was the poor affinity between the two points (rootstock and graft) both in rooting and especially in production yield: the latter in grafted plants was often very depressed so as not to make convenient the additional cost of the grafted plant. But today, Pepperstorm F1 opens new possibilities for grafting on this species thanks to its ability to increase productivity while protecting the plant from telluric pathogens.

What about Pepperstorm behavior?
Pepperstorm F1 behavior in the field is so good that it lets the plant face a long cultivation cycle, ensuring strong vigor and high growing uniformity. Moreover, this presence leads to the achievement of the same or even higher yield compared to not grafted plants. This is due to an improved continuity of fruit settings and a much thicker peel of the fruit, which become then more consistent and heavier.

Pepperstorm 3Surveys carried out on bullhorn bell pepper fruits have shown that Pepperstorm F1 tends to thicken the fruit wall both compared to other rootstocks and to frank plants

Pepperstorm F1 showed an excellent affinity with the main varieties on the market belonging both to the Lamuyo and Horn typologies, long and middle while keeping the original organoleptic and color features of each typology of sweet pepper.

Intra-specific hybrid for autumn-winter transplants characterized by a strong, productive boost to the plant. It fits well with different typologies of peppers allowing the plant to successfully overcome winter stress.

It has a positive influence on the quality of fruits, increasing the thickness of walls considerably.

Israel announces creation of global seed company

Two Israeli seed producers, Nirit Seeds and TomaTech, have joined forces to create Israel’s largest vegetable seed company. This synergy will enable unique seed breeding research and development that will accelerate the company’s growth in the international seed markets.

Upon completion of the merger, the company will have more than 80 employees worldwide, including molecular biologists, breeders, agronomists, and others.
The company will improve its breeding activities in Israel, Spain, Mexico and Italy, as well as significantly expand its representation in the Netherlands and North America, with a particular focus on growing vegetables in high-tech greenhouses.

Nirit Seeds is one of the most successful internationally traded tomato and pepper seed producers, investing in the development of revolutionary genetic technologies. TomaTech is one of the leading tomato seed companies in Israel, developing premium varieties, including those resistant to the dangerous Tomato Brown Ruffle Virus (ToBRFV).

The production of crop seeds is one of the most advanced and high-tech sectors in Israel. According to the Seed Department of the Federation of Israel Chambers of Commerce, seed exports currently generate $200 million in annual revenue. There are about 25 large and medium-sized companies in the local industry.

For reference. According to market research, the global vegetable seed industry is valued at $8 billion a year and is growing at a CAGR of 8%.
