Revolutionizing Greenhouse Climate Control: ClearVue and Iyris Lead the Way in Agricultural Innovation

The increasing global temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns pose significant challenges to agriculture, particularly for greenhouse farmers. In response, technological advancements are revolutionizing how we manage greenhouse climates, ensuring sustainability and maximizing crop yields. Among the leaders in this transformation are ClearVue Technologies and Iyris, two companies offering innovative solutions aimed at solving climate-related challenges in agriculture.

ClearVue Technologies has taken a significant step forward by acquiring ROOTS Sustainable Agricultural Technologies, an Israeli company known for its advanced agricultural systems. ROOTS developed two key technologies: root zone temperature optimization (RZTO) and irrigation by condensation (IBC). These technologies are designed to autonomously regulate the temperature of plant roots and extract moisture from the atmosphere, respectively. When integrated with ClearVue’s solar-glazed glass, these solutions will provide a smart, energy-efficient system for greenhouses, optimizing both plant growth and water use. The importance of these technologies cannot be overstated as water scarcity becomes an ever-growing concern. According to the United Nations, agriculture accounts for 70% of global water usage, with water management in greenhouses being crucial to future food security.

ClearVue’s acquisition is part of the company’s broader vision to become a major player in the $50 billion agricultural greenhouse market, offering integrated, net-zero solutions. By combining solar-powered glass with ROOTS’ technologies, ClearVue aims to reduce the carbon footprint of greenhouses while improving overall productivity. This partnership also promises to address the challenges of extreme weather and resource scarcity, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices for future generations.

Iyris: Cooling Greenhouses Without Sacrificing Growth

On the other side of the globe, Iyris is leading the charge with its SecondSky technology, which offers a novel approach to greenhouse cooling. SecondSky is embedded into plastic polymer sheeting, which reduces greenhouse temperatures by approximately 7°C. This reduction is achieved without diminishing the amount of light that plants need for photosynthesis, making it an ideal solution for maintaining optimal growth conditions while managing heat stress.

Iyris’ technology tackles two critical issues: water overuse and energy-intensive cooling systems. According to the World Bank, water shortages are becoming increasingly common in agricultural regions worldwide, making water-saving technologies like SecondSky crucial for sustainable farming. The SecondSky solution also reduces the need for traditional, energy-draining cooling systems, leading to significant savings in operational costs.

The impact of Iyris’ technology is already being felt globally, with installations in 15 countries, including arid regions like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and parts of the United States. These regions face some of the harshest climate conditions, making efficient temperature management essential for successful farming. By reducing water usage by up to 30%, SecondSky ensures that crops can thrive even in extreme temperatures, promoting more sustainable farming practices.

The Urgency of Adaptation in Agriculture

As climate change accelerates, the urgency of adapting farming practices becomes more pressing. The rising global temperatures, already recorded as some of the hottest years on record, exacerbate the stress placed on crops and food systems. Heat stress can lead to reduced crop yields, higher food prices, and even food shortages, threatening global food security.

Innovative technologies like those from ClearVue and Iyris offer a pathway forward. By reducing water consumption, energy usage, and greenhouse gas emissions, these solutions not only help mitigate the impact of climate change but also ensure that farmers can maintain or even increase their productivity in a more sustainable manner. These technologies also offer cost-effective alternatives to traditional climate control methods, which often rely on energy-intensive systems or harmful chemicals.

The agricultural industry is on the brink of a revolution, and the integration of these advanced technologies into everyday farming practices will be crucial for adapting to a changing climate. Farmers who embrace these innovations will be better equipped to navigate the challenges of the future, securing both the environment and their livelihoods.
