In 2021, recognizing the potential of unused agricultural land, eight young entrepreneurs in Hà Tĩnh formed the Thanh Sen Youth Cooperative. They leased over 4.3 hectares of fallow land in Đồng Môn ward, transforming it into a productive organic farm. Their cultivation includes a variety of crops such as asparagus, celery, spinach, tomatoes, beets, carrots, and cucumbers.
To ensure year-round production and protect crops from adverse weather, the cooperative invested in a 5,000 m² greenhouse. This infrastructure supports continuous cultivation cycles, enhancing both yield and quality.
Commitment to Organic Standards
The cooperative adheres to stringent organic farming practices, encapsulated in their “3 No’s” policy: no chemical pesticides, no chemical fertilizers, and no preservatives. Soil preparation involves meticulous processes, including composting with organic matter and regular pH monitoring, to maintain soil health and fertility.
Pest management relies on manual removal and the application of certified organic biocontrol agents, ensuring crop protection without compromising organic integrity.
Market Recognition and Economic Impact
In June 2023, the cooperative’s dedication was recognized when their produce received organic certification from NHONHO Technology Co., Ltd. This certification has opened doors to broader markets, including partnerships with clean agriculture enterprises like Hatisa and supply agreements with local retailers in Hà Tĩnh.
The cooperative’s operations yield an average of 1.5 to 2 tons of vegetables monthly. This productivity not only meets local demand but also contributes to the cooperative’s annual profits, estimated between 300 to 400 million VND. Additionally, the initiative provides stable employment for several full-time and seasonal workers, with monthly incomes ranging from 6 to 8 million VND.
Aligning with National Agricultural Trends
Vietnam’s organic food market has been experiencing significant growth, reaching approximately USD 100 million in 2023—a 20% increase since 2020. This surge is driven by rising health consciousness and environmental awareness among consumers.
Government policies further support this trend. Initiatives aim to increase organic fertilizer production by 25% by 2025 and ensure that 30% of registered fertilizers are organic by 2030.
The Thanh Sen Youth Cooperative exemplifies how innovative approaches to agriculture can revitalize unused land, promote sustainable practices, and contribute to local economies. Their success story serves as a model for integrating organic farming into Vietnam’s broader agricultural development goals.
