Turkestan’s Greenhouse Revolution: Scaling Up Production

Greenhouse farming in Turkestan Region, Kazakhstan, has become a crucial pillar of the country’s agricultural sector. In 2024, greenhouse complexes in the region produced 150,000 tons of vegetables, covering over 40% of Kazakhstan’s fresh produce needs. However, local agronomists and farm owners believe this is just the beginning. With further expansion and financial support, production is set to reach 200,000 tons in 2025.

The majority of greenhouses are concentrated in the Saryagash District, where thousands of local workers are employed in vegetable and fruit cultivation. For many, greenhouse farming is not just a job but a vital source of income. However, despite strong demand, expansion is often hindered by a lack of working capital.

Tropical Farming in Kazakhstan: A New Challenge

While traditional greenhouse farming in Turkestan focuses on vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, some farmers have taken a bold step by cultivating tropical fruits. In Sayram District, agribusinesses have successfully grown bananas using Turkish agricultural technology. Over 1,000 banana saplings were planted in greenhouses covering five hectares, equipped with advanced drip irrigation and climate control systems.

Entrepreneurs are also experimenting with avocados, mangoes, and pineapples, working closely with Turkish agronomists to adapt these crops to the local environment. While tropical fruit production remains a niche market, it demonstrates the region’s potential for diversification and high-value crop cultivation.

Government Support Fuels Greenhouse Expansion

Recognizing the importance of greenhouse farming, the Kazakh government has implemented significant subsidy programs to support commercial greenhouse complexes. In 2024, farmers received over 8 million tenge ($17,000) per hectare in subsidies for heated greenhouses. Additionally, the government covered up to 30% of construction costs for new greenhouse facilities, making large-scale farming more accessible.

These initiatives have already had a tangible impact. Over 1,000 greenhouses have been established in Turkestan Region, with 30 hectares of industrial greenhouses benefiting from state-funded heating system upgrades last year. With this support, the region is on track to meet its ambitious production goals.

Turkestan Region’s greenhouse industry is a model of modern agricultural innovation, blending traditional vegetable cultivation with advanced climate-controlled farming. With strong government backing, improved infrastructure, and ambitious farmers willing to explore new crops, the region is poised to become Kazakhstan’s leading greenhouse hub. If the growth trajectory continues, Turkestan’s greenhouses could soon supply even larger domestic and international markets with fresh, high-quality produce.
