Temperature controllers, fill lights, thermometers, geothermal lines… Walking into Yongfeng County, Ji’an City, Jiangxi Province, the “hometown of ecological vegetables”, vegetable seedling greenhouses are filled with agricultural science and technology elements everywhere.

Since late January, the temperature difference in Jiangxi Province has been large, with a minimum temperature of minus 4 degrees. The steel-frame greenhouse in Zuolong Provincial Modern Agricultural Demonstration (Science and Technology) Park in Yongfeng County is full of spring, and vegetable seedlings such as peppers, cabbage, and cucumbers are growing happily.

During the Spring Festival, major vegetable farmers and agricultural operators in Yongfeng County rushed to seize agricultural time and scientifically carry out early spring vegetable production.

“Work started on the second day of the New Year, and the base also issued a red envelope for the start of the new Year. It’s a good day. It’s the New Year every day.”At the Zuosheng Vegetable production base, Liu Meiyu neatly sowed the cabbage seeds in the bucket into the plowed soil.

Liu Meiyu is a villager in Luofu Village, Zuolong Township, Yongfeng County.Sowing, leveling the land, picking seedlings, transplanting, and watering, she didn’t care about enjoying the festive atmosphere at home. Together with more than 20 other villagers, she was very busy in a vegetable greenhouse less than 100 meters away from home.

“We started raising seedlings in early December last year, and now we are planting on a large scale. The first batch of cabbage in early spring is expected to be available around March 1.”Du Changming, the person in charge of Zuosheng, pointed to the cabbage that had already emerged in the greenhouse and said.

“The listing on March 1st means that it is more than a month earlier than in previous years. This is not simple. The market conditions and price advantages of vegetables have all been highlighted.”Shuai Shougen, chief of the technology Unit of Yongfeng County Vegetable Industry Development Center, added.

“The number of orders for the Spring Festival this year is twice as large as usual.”Du Changming introduced that relying on the precise management of the smart agriculture platform, Zuosheng has realized the continuous production of vegetables throughout the year, prolonging the listing period of fresh vegetables such as beauty pepper, winter melon, and celery.

“More than 400 double-layer greenhouses and greenhouses all adopt new technologies such as water and fertilizer integration, green prevention and control, organic fertilizer instead of fertilizer, hole plate seedling breeding, and high-temperature stuffy sheds. Vegetable production not only saves labor, reduces medicine, saves water, but also increases production and efficiency.”Du Changming said.

In recent years, Yongfeng County has positioned the vegetable industry as the first priority industry for the characteristic rich people, coordinated the development of characteristic varieties, and gradually turned small characteristic varieties into large industries.

Zuosheng is a leading agricultural industrialization enterprise introduced in the county in 2019, and it is also one of the key vegetable high-standard demonstration parks. While helping to start the ”Yongfeng Vegetables” brand, the radiation has driven more than 260 surrounding farmers to achieve employment on their doorstep.

“Since 2019, Yongfeng County has explored a new model of vegetable industry development of ‘Leading enterprise + base + Rural revitalization college + professional vegetable farmer’, raising 30 million yuan of vegetable development funds every year for awards and subsidies, and building a group of leading enterprises, building a group of exemplary bases, and cultivating a group of professional vegetable farmers.”Tu Niansheng, deputy Director of Yongfeng County Vegetable Industry Development Center, introduced.

It is understood that, represented by Zuosheng, Yongfeng County has cultivated 6 leading enterprises at or above the municipal level.Since 2022, it has driven the county to add 20,000 mu of vegetable area in new facilities, and developed more than 3,000 new business entities such as “Zhifu Farms”.

At the same time, the county supports leading enterprises, vegetable bases, rural revitalization colleges, etc. to establish a joint training system, and has accelerated the training of a group of professional vegetable farmers who understand modern agricultural technology and market management. At present, there are more than 40,000 vegetable production personnel in the county.

Quan Xiaohua is a new type of professional vegetable farmer. The Quan family farm she runs is located in Shebei Village, Tancheng District, and it has been the third year of growing morels.“Three years ago, driven by my father, I started trying to grow morels. If you encounter technical problems, ask other large planters for advice, and ask technical experts in the county for advice. The technology is mature, and the harvest is getting better year by year.”Quan Xiaohua said with relief.

On January 26th, in the Provincial Modern Agriculture Demonstration (Science and Technology) Park in Zuolong, Yongfeng County, Zeng Chunhua, a farmer technician, together with the workers, laid the geothermal line evenly on the plowed soil ridge according to the width of the seedling hole on the watermelon seedling tray.”Watermelons are afraid of cold, and geothermal lines can help cope with this wave of cold.”Zeng Chunhua introduced.

The Yongfeng County Vegetable Germplasm Resource Protection and Breeding Center, which is next to the seedling greenhouse, has more than 100 seeds of Yongfeng native vegetable varieties on display.

For industrial revitalization, science and technology take the lead.In 2022, Yongfeng County and Jiangxi Agricultural University jointly established the “Jiangxi Yongfeng Vegetable Science and Technology Institute”.The small academy is a comprehensive demonstration base integrating vegetable scientific research, resource protection, experimental demonstration, product testing, training services, and seedling supply. It is also a vegetable germplasm resource protection and breeding center in Yongfeng County.

“We moved the postgraduate class to the field and the production greenhouse.”The chief expert of the Small Institute of Science and Technology and Professor Wu Caijun of Jiangxi Agricultural University introduced that the Small Institute of Science and Technology will become an important base for the training of graduate students and new vocational vegetable farmers, the demonstration and promotion of agricultural science and technology, and the transfer and transformation of scientific and technological achievements to help rural revitalization.

With technical support, vegetable production has increased, but it is not feasible without sales. To this end, Yongfeng County reorganized the vegetable professional Association to promote the development of order agriculture, explore the “e-commerce + farmland dining table” sales model, and realize the whole process from farmland to the dining table is green, ensuring that consumers can eat “safe dishes”.

Now is a good time to pick and eat fresh morels. At the Tuanzhen Family Farm in Yutou Village, Yanbei Town, a merchant from Sichuan stayed outside the greenhouse early and placed an order for boxes of fresh morels.

“The mushroom production rate is quite high, with an overall output of about 850 kg. According to the profit of 20,000 mu, the farm can achieve a net profit of about 4 million yuan.”Yan Chengquan, the person in charge of Tuanzhen Farm, smiled on his face.In previous years, Tuanzhen Farm used two crop rotations of “early spring vegetables + fruits and vegetables”. This year, under the guidance and technical support of local government departments, crop rotations of morels were increased, and the first year of planting achieved a good harvest.

“Next, Yongfeng County will accelerate the construction of a science and technology demonstration base and the cultivation of new types of professional vegetable farmers, so that characteristic small varieties have their own loud business cards, and promote the vegetable industry to become the leading industry for farmers to become rich and rural revitalization.”Jiang Zhixin, director of the Yongfeng County Rural Revitalization Bureau and director of the Vegetable Industry Development Center, said.
