The experiences of past years, when they tried to plant flowers in a relatively early period for Magadan – at the very beginning of summer, did not justify themselves – the soil, as a rule, did not warm up enough. This year we decided not to rush too much. Now, seedlings with a long vegetation period are ripening in the greenhouses of the Green Economy Combine, and the one that grows quickly is on the way.
Among early ripening plants are calendula and nasturtium: they were planted at the end of April, but daisies, cineraria and lobelia are species with a long growth period, so their seeds are sent to the ground at the end of February. They will also plant petunias, carnations, snapdragons, midday flowers and dozens of other flowers.
“Now we are carrying out the picking process – we transfer seedlings from greenhouses into boxes and special cassettes, so that they can then be taken out for street planting,” says Sergey Shurkhno, chief agronomist of the KZH. – Everything, of course, depends on weather conditions, but I think that from June 10 we will start planting flowers in city flower beds.
According to Sergei Shurkhno, the seedlings are sent into the soil to a depth of 10-15 cm, and so that the flowers do not die and do not get sick, the soil should warm up to at least +10 degrees by this time, approximately like the outside air temperature.
– Somehow they planted flower seedlings at the very beginning of summer – on June 2 or 3, but later they realized that it was still too early – the seedlings took root hard, – said Sergey Shurkhno. – This year we decided to wait for the soil to warm up at the proper level.
The places of flowerbeds are traditional – next to the municipal Cultural Center, the Knowledge store, in the squares of Voronov and the 60th anniversary of Magadan, the ring of the 31st quarter, etc. There are about 20 addresses in total, the total area is 4730 meters.
