Stone birch seedlings, coniferous and deciduous crops will be planted there for compensatory reforestation on the peninsula.
“This nursery was developed in 1988 by order of the Kamchatka Forest Administration for the forestry of the Kamchatka Territory. There are eight fields where various forest crops were grown in those years. Greenhouses were used to grow coniferous planting material. This year, our institution will plant seedlings for compensatory reforestation in the greenhouse, where seedlings of stone birch and spruce will be planted. This will allow us to restore the forest fund of our region in large enough volumes,” said Natalya Turukina, deputy director of the Kamchatka Forest Protection State Autonomous Institution.
A prerequisite for the full implementation of reforestation is the planting of zoned seeds. Planting seedlings grown from local seeds, according to scientists, makes it possible to grow disease-resistant forest plantations and affects the preservation of the gene pool of the main forest-forming species of the Kamchatka Territory.
The greenhouse was covered with foil and fertile soil was brought in. Spruces and stone birches will spend a year in the greenhouse, and deciduous crops two years before they are planted in open ground. Work in the nursery will be carried out by employees of forestries.
Recall that on the territory of the Kamchatka Territory, reforestation is planned on an area of more than 200 hectares.
