Agromediterranea, a company of the Foodiverse group that specializes in the production and distribution of vegetables, has launched an innovation project to offer its customers live lettuces, that keep their roots so that consumers have access to a fresher and cleaner product. “In addition, these crops won’t receive any phytosanitary treatments as they will be grown within a completely controlled environment that guarantees they are free of pests and insects so there is no need to use herbicides or pesticides,” they share.
The initiative is being developed at the Center for Agronomic Innovation (CIAM) located in the Valencian town of Montserrat. The lettuce will be grown using a strategy based on hydroponic cultivation, without soil, which allows better control of the entire process and extracting the whole product when the time comes.
Vicent Mañez, head of the innovation area, said: “This project puts us at the forefront of the sector as it allows us to offer our customers what consumers are demanding: products brought directly from the field, that are fresh and completely safe. For years we have been reducing, if not directly eliminating, the use of phytosanitary products or developing closed vertical crops that have no impact on the soil and that allow reusing 100% of the water.”
The project is being carried out with the Roble Leaf variety, but the objective is to work to incorporate in the medium and long term new varieties of lettuce and other products.
30% less water
Sustainability is key for Agromediterranea, which is why it has implemented various measures to be more sustainable. Its more than 4,000 hectares of crops located in 7 provinces have rainwater accumulation systems. In addition, all of them use lower flow controlled irrigation systems, which allows saving 30% of the water.
They have also incorporated harvesting machines to sanitize and pack vegetables directly in the field, and generate a more efficient distribution. The plant has LED technology and, in order to reduce carbon emissions, they work with returnable packaging that uses biodegradable or bio compostable materials, implementing reverse logistics to recover and recycle all of it.
The company showcases all of these values in its latest corporate video that has just been published. The video summarizes the corporate reality of a company that sells more than 500 different references, adapted to different formats, packaging, and weight, in 25 markets throughout Europe.
