In an ambitious move towards sustainability, the Solarenn cooperative, comprising 30 growers across 60 hectares of greenhouses, has implemented a cutting-edge solution at its packaging station. Recently completed renovations focused on applying heat-resistant paint to a significant area of the roof, marking a strategic effort to minimize energy usage.
The project specifically targeted the 2,500 square meters covering the cooling unit area, a critical space requiring stable temperatures for preserving delicate produce. Isabelle Georges, managing director of Solarenn, emphasizes the cooperative’s commitment to environmental stewardship: “This initiative aligns with our short and medium-term goals to reduce our carbon footprint.”
Pascal Théraud, the production manager, highlights the practical benefits of the newly applied white reflective paint: “By reducing the temperature by approximately -5°C, particularly in our logistics area with refrigeration units, we’ve achieved notable energy savings.” Collaborating closely with Enercool, a specialist in cool roofing technologies, Solarenn estimates significant financial gains, projecting savings of nearly €100,000 over the next decade.
The innovative cool roof paint works by reflecting sunlight and infrared rays, thereby preventing excessive heat buildup. This capability not only reduces the strain on cooling systems but also ensures that optimal storage conditions are maintained for sensitive crops like tomatoes and strawberries. “With more consistent temperatures, our produce quality remains high, meeting stringent preservation standards,” adds Théraud.
Enercool’s approach integrates advanced materials such as silica aerogels, renowned for their insulative properties. This incorporation enhances the paint’s effectiveness in managing heat transfer and thermal conductivity, contributing to its status as a leader in cool roofing solutions.
The successful application of cool roof paint at Solarenn not only enhances operational efficiency but also improves employee comfort within the facility. By lowering indoor temperatures and reducing reliance on mechanical cooling, the cooperative fosters a more sustainable working environment.
As Solarenn continues to pioneer eco-friendly practices in agricultural operations, their collaboration with Enercool exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to reducing environmental impact while optimizing production capabilities.
