Greenhouse vegetable growing is one of the strongest agricultural sectors in the region. In 2022, 46 thousand tons of cucumbers, tomatoes and greens were produced in the greenhouses of the Novosibirsk Region, which is much more than is required to supply the domestic regional market.
“Our region reached full self-sufficiency in greenhouse vegetables two years ago thanks to the active construction of new greenhouse complexes. Now the total area of year-round cultivation of greenhouse vegetables is over 50 hectares. According to the results of 2022, the self-sufficiency of the Novosibirsk Region in greenhouse vegetables is estimated at 134%,” said Evgeny Leshchenko, Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Agriculture of the Novosibirsk Region.
The gross harvest of greenhouse vegetables, according to preliminary data, amounted to 45.9 thousand tons in 2022 (109.3% of the plan), including: cucumbers – 39.3 thousand tons, tomatoes – 4.4 thousand tons , other crops – 2.2 thousand tons.
One of the largest producers of greenhouse vegetables in our region is the Sady Giganta agricultural complex, the total area of greenhouses at the plant is over 11 hectares. Thanks to modern technologies and the rejection of chemical plant protection products, the products of this greenhouse complex are an environmentally friendly and healthy product of high quality.
In 2022, the gross harvest of greenhouse vegetables at the plant amounted to 5.2 thousand tons, including 4,120 tons of cucumbers and 907 tons of tomatoes.
Vegetable gardening in the “Gardens of the Giant” is also carried out – they grow carrots, beets, radishes, as well as potatoes. In 2022, the farm planted 220 hectares of potatoes, 30 hectares of vegetables. An irrigation system is used for the production of vegetables in the open field. The enterprise has its own modern vegetable storage for 10 thousand tons of products.
“For the Novosibirsk region, open-field vegetable growing is an extremely important area, because potatoes and vegetables of the “borscht set”: carrots, beets, cabbage are almost the only types of agricultural products for which our region has not yet reached self-sufficiency, – said Evgeny Leshchenko. “More than half of the demand has to be imported from other regions of the country and neighboring countries.”
According to the minister, producers of vegetables and potatoes, like other agricultural producers, enjoy the current federal and regional state support under the program “Development of Agriculture and Regulation of Agricultural Products, Raw Materials and Food Markets in the Novosibirsk Region”, but for more active development of this industry in the region additional mechanisms to support vegetable growers will be developed. Thus, the minister called the construction of vegetable stores the most important task – this will help the region to keep as much as possible the volume of vegetables of its own production all year round, and reduce the influence of seasonality on the price level for vegetables and potatoes.
