In recent years, Da Lat has witnessed a surge in greenhouse constructions, contributing to adverse environmental changes. Despite economic benefits, rapid greenhouse expansion has disrupted the city’s urban and architectural aesthetics, prompting the province of Lam Dong to embark on initiatives to gradually eliminate these structures from urban and suburban areas.
Since 2004, Lam Dong province has been implementing a high-tech agricultural development program. By 2020, the total area of high-tech agriculture in Lam Dong reached 60,200 hectares, with nearly 4,350 hectares dedicated to greenhouses, predominantly in Da Lat.
The province aims to reduce greenhouse areas by 20% by 2025 and ultimately eliminate them from Da Lat’s urban areas by 2030.
Agricultural innovation, such as utilizing cage houses, has shown promising results, with farmers experiencing significant increases in productivity and income. However, the transition away from greenhouses requires substantial support for farmers to adapt to alternative farming methods.
Efforts to provide financial assistance include proposals for tailored credit packages. Lam Dong province plans to offer credits for relocation, renovation, and conversion of greenhouse areas, totaling 4.82 trillion VND, with partial interest subsidies from local and commercial banks.
Da Lat’s journey towards sustainable agriculture reflects a delicate balance between economic development and environmental preservation. By phasing out greenhouses and promoting innovative farming practices, the city aims to preserve its natural beauty while ensuring the prosperity of its agricultural communities. Collaborative efforts between government agencies, financial institutions, and farmers are crucial in realizing this vision of a greener, more sustainable future for Da Lat.
