The Stavropol Territory set new records for the production of greenhouse vegetables
The Stavropol Territory has once again strengthened its position as a leader in the production of greenhouse vegetables. In 2023, the region’s greenhouse farms harvested more than 100,000 tons of vegetables, representing a significant increase of almost 10% compared to the previous year. This achievement underlines the region’s commitment to maintaining a leading position in this agricultural sector.
The success story of Stavropol’s greenhouse farming industry is not only about increasing yields, but also about strategic expansion and significant government support, which played a decisive role in stimulating this growth. Since the beginning of 2024, various forms of government support have been available to greenhouse farms, including grants and subsidies. This financial assistance is aimed at supporting the creation of new greenhouse complexes, for the development of which a special budget of 10 million rubles has been allocated throughout the year.
Expansion efforts are already bearing fruit. Over the past year, the total area allocated for greenhouse complexes in Stavropol has increased by 100 hectares. This expansion resulted in an increase in harvest of almost 40,000 tons, up 25% from 2022. Stavropol greenhouse vegetables today dominate store shelves across the country, reaching as far as the Far North.
The main crops grown in these greenhouses are cucumbers, various varieties of tomatoes and lettuce – vegetables that are in constant high demand. Governor Vladimir Vladimirov emphasized the importance of ensuring that at least 50% of the vegetables on store shelves are locally produced. Reflecting this priority, government support for the greenhouse sector increased by almost 80% compared to the previous year.
In the future, the region plans to further expand its greenhouse area, ensuring a stable supply of fresh, high-quality vegetables throughout the year. This expansion is in line with Russia’s broader goals of import substitution and food security. The Governor’s vision includes expanding local manufacturing capacity to meet national demand and reduce dependence on imported goods.
“The Stavropol Territory continues to develop the greenhouse sector by introducing new technologies and increasing productivity. This progress not only increases the vegetable harvest, but also creates additional employment opportunities for the local population,” commented Valery Myakishev, associate professor of the Stavropol branch of the Presidential Academy.
The production of greenhouse vegetables in the Stavropol region is a testament to the power of strategic investment and innovation in agriculture. With continued government support and a clear focus on expansion, the region is well positioned to maintain its leadership in the sector. This growth not only ensures a reliable supply of fresh vegetables all year round, but also makes a significant contribution to regional and national food security.
