Industrial tourism is on a wave of popularity today, although the idea itself is not new.
It is interesting and informative to see how certain goods are produced, how production is organized, how people work.
According to the portal visit-kaluga.ru , there are about 20 tourist sites in the region that can be attributed to this direction.
In the near future, this collection will be supplemented by another object – Kaluga Flower Holding LLC in the village of Nedelnoye. Here you can see with your own eyes what a million scarlet roses from the famous song look like, although the company grows not only scarlet roses, but also gerberas, tulips, lilies, chrysanthemums and other flowers.
Kaluga Flower Holding is the largest flower–growing enterprise in Russia: five greenhouses with a total area of 27.5 hectares, more than 400 employees. The first flower cutting took place in May 2019. The main competitive advantage of a local manufacturer is proximity to the consumer. The life of the flower after cutting is 10-14 days, and the sooner it is in the vase, the longer it will stand.
The equipment and technologies at the enterprise are Dutch, planting material was also imported from Holland. When the rose bushes got stronger, they switched to cuttings. But not everything is so simple: they are grown under license, under the supervision of the owner of the variety.
Roses in greenhouses grow on special briquettes made of mineral wool. Drip irrigation is connected to each plant. Everything is automated: watering, power, lighting, ventilation, temperature and humidity parameters are set. The “Queen of Flowers” is warm and light-loving, only a few hours a day she rests in the dark.
Despite automation, it is impossible to do without the attentive gaze of a specialist and skillful human hands in a greenhouse. Every morning, shearers go to work. They collect flowers, recalculate, enter data into a computer system. Flowers are placed in baths with a special solution for soldering for a day. After lunch, flower growers take care of the plants. What exactly needs to be done, says the agronomist.
Curious journalists noticed the empty bottles. An employee of the greenhouse explained that there was a biological product here – “good” ticks that fight pest ticks.
Gerbera is extremely decorative and at the same time not as demanding to care as a rose. But there are important subtleties here too.
– Gerbera is never cut off, it is broken out of the socket so that there are no stumps left. Otherwise, the bush may rot,” explains agronomist Spartak Skok. – The only tool is human hands. The agronomist examines each plant in the greenhouse and can instruct flower growers to bend the leaves so that more light comes to the outlet.
Gerberas are sorted into cardboard “rackets” of 10 pieces, cut, twisted and packed in bags – in this form they arrive to wholesale buyers.
