Due to extremely high energy prices, the development of the greenhouse industry in the Netherlands may roll back 10 years, according to Nieuweoogst.
According to Rabobank’s forecast, the production of protected soil vegetables in the country will decrease by 5-10% in 2022, and greenhouse cultivation of flowers – by about 10%. As a result, imported products will partially displace Dutch products on the local market.
Next year, according to Rabobank forecasts, production volumes are expected to decrease by 7% in floriculture and by 5% in the cultivation of protected ground vegetables.
An increase in the cost of production may lead to the fact that the development of the industry will stop, and companies will stop investing in projects for the transition to alternative energy sources. According to industry representatives, the state needs more effective measures to support the greenhouse industry. In addition, it is necessary to reduce dependence on traditional energy sources, including natural gas. And switching to liquefied natural gas (LNG) will not solve the problem.
The minimum price for liquefied natural gas is determined, among other things, by purchasing power in Asian countries. Now that China is experiencing economic growth, there is a risk that the price of LNG will rise again.
