According to the results of this year, the Russian production of greenhouse products may increase by 4-8%. The growth rate of gross yields of vegetables grown in protected soil is now somewhat more modest than in the first years of the sector’s development. But this situation is logical: the market is increasingly saturated with goods of its own production, and it is no longer necessary to bet on increasing volumes. Now companies are working more to expand the range and increase business efficiency. However, new greenhouses are also being built: up to 150 hectares may be put into operation in 2022.
The outgoing year for production in the closed ground has developed positively. Mainly because another record gross collection is expected, according to Ekaterina Mikhaleva, project manager at Strategy Partners. According to her estimate, the increase in the yield of greenhouse vegetables to the indicator of 2021 may be up to 8%. “The main increase will be given by new projects and those greenhouse complexes that reached full capacity in 2022,” she explains. Enterprises are actively continuing to be built in scarce regions — on Sakhalin, in the Amur, Kemerovo regions, and the Altai Territory. This may have a positive impact on the market in terms of volumes already in 2023-2024.
Growth Technologies estimates an increase in yield of about 4%, up to 1.6 million tons. “At the end of 2021 and at the beginning of this year, several complexes were put into operation using modern technologies of additional illumination, they replace less productive greenhouses of the last generation, thanks to which the gross harvest of products is growing,” Tamara Reshetnikova, CEO of the analytical company, echoes Mikhaleva. In total, by the end of 2022, about 120-150 hectares of new capacities will be launched, the expert estimates. There are several projects, the commissioning of which is scheduled for December, but in fact it may happen in January and February, she does not exclude. Almost all new greenhouse complexes are part of agricultural holdings, that is, they are the second and third stages of construction. Reshetnikova calls the companies “ECO-culture” and “Growth” the main market consolidators.
At the same time, old greenhouses will continue to be disposed of — about 80 hectares this year, the expert predicts. “These are third-generation facilities that were built back in Soviet times. According to production indicators, they are incomparable with modern yields, so the market will hardly feel their departure,” she notes. — Some old greenhouses are practically not used for vegetable growing, some enterprises have already been repurposed for growing seedlings and seasonal flowers.”
Prices have risen following the production
“Agrisgaz” (engaged in the construction of greenhouses) estimates the total area of closed ground put into operation at the end of this year at 70-100 hectares. The company itself has built about 50 hectares of greenhouses in 2022, of which 20 hectares are for the company “Growth”. The company also implemented one of the stages of a greenhouse project in the Tyumen region.
Agrocomplex “Ivanisovo” (Moscow region) after the summer technological break resumed production of greenhouse products in September. In the last turnover (from September 2021 to May 2022), the company made a choice in favor of one vegetable crop — short-fruited prickly cucumber. In the current season, three tomato varieties will be grown on half of the area: pink, large-fruited red and plum-shaped red. The other half will be occupied by cucumbers — short-fruited prickly and smooth medium-fruited.
The company harvested its first cucumber crop in October, and tomato in November, according to the company’s chief agronomist Murat Khutov. “According to the production program approved by the shareholders, in the new production turnover we plan to grow more than 11 thousand tons of fresh vegetables with an average yield of 70 kg/m2,” he shares.
Magnit expects to increase the harvest of vegetables in its own shopping center “Green Line” (Krasnodar Territory) to 58 thousand tons of cucumbers and tomatoes of various types, including premium cherry and cocktail tomatoes. The share of own greenhouse vegetables in the total volume of products sold by the retailer in this category is 18%, the company’s press service informs.
