On August 15, Armenian Minister Gevorg Papoyan, accompanied by Deputy Minister Arman Khojoyan, toured a modern greenhouse complex in the Noragavit district of Yerevan. Established in 2018 by the company “Spayka,” the complex spans 50 hectares and provides 800 jobs, showcasing significant advancements in agricultural technology and sustainability.
Innovative Greenhouse Technology
During the visit, Minister Papoyan observed the greenhouse’s advanced technological processes designed to create an optimal microclimate for plant cultivation. This facility employs cutting-edge techniques to maximize energy efficiency, reducing resource consumption and minimizing environmental impact. Notably, the complex uses only biological pest control methods, ensuring the production of ecologically clean vegetables that meet European standards.
The greenhouse’s emphasis on biological pest control reflects a broader trend towards sustainable agriculture. By avoiding chemical pesticides, the facility not only produces healthier food but also contributes to environmental conservation. This approach aligns with global movements towards reducing the ecological footprint of agricultural practices.
Impact on Food Security and Local Economy
Minister Papoyan highlighted the importance of such investments in advancing the agricultural sector, enhancing food security, improving product quality, stimulating economic growth, and creating job opportunities. The greenhouse complex represents a significant step forward in Armenia’s agricultural modernization efforts, providing a model for other regions to follow.
Following the greenhouse tour, the delegation visited Spayka’s state-of-the-art factory for blue cheese and other dairy products, which boasts an annual production capacity of over 2,000 tons. This $15 million investment has created 120 additional jobs and features a production line capable of manufacturing a full range of blue cheeses. The factory’s products are intended for markets within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Middle East, and, eventually, Europe, pending compliance with EU dairy regulations.
Strategic Role in Supply Chain
Minister Papoyan also explored Spayka’s cold storage facility in Yerevan, which preserves over 15,000 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables. This storage capacity is crucial for maintaining product quality and availability from November to May, supporting both local consumption and export markets.
The visit by Minister Papoyan underscores the vital role of modern technology in transforming Armenia’s agricultural sector. By investing in advanced greenhouse systems and dairy production facilities, Armenia is not only enhancing its food security but also boosting local economies and creating employment opportunities. The commitment to sustainable practices and cutting-edge technology sets a high standard for future agricultural developments in the region.
