In the heart of Utena, Lithuanian farmers Irma and Egidijus Kucinskas have transformed their 6-hectare plot into a thriving agricultural paradise. Combining decades of UK experience with a commitment to organic farming, they grow an impressive variety of crops, from early strawberries to late ripening pumpkins.

In their organic greenhouses, the Kucinskas start the growing season with a variety of seedlings, including peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and eggplants. Using a universal peat substrate and enriching it with seaweed extract and organic fertilizers, they ensure powerful growth and nutrient absorption by plants.

When spring arrives, greenhouse shelves are adorned with promising new plants, signaling a bountiful harvest to come. The use of raised beds and drip irrigation systems optimizes the use of space and water, promoting efficient and sustainable farming practices.

Beyond the greenhouses, the fields are a patchwork of orchards, berry bushes and vegetable rows. Here the Kucinskas tend their watermelons and melons, using innovative grafting techniques to improve productivity and sustainability. By grafting watermelon varieties onto robust rootstocks, they improve nutrient absorption and increase resistance to environmental stressors, resulting in larger, sweeter fruits.

When harvest time comes, the fields are a vibrant canvas of colors and flavors, a testament to Kucinskas’ commitment to quality and sustainability. From hand-pollinating strawberries to making artisanal preserves, every step of the farming process is infused with care and expertise.

In the busy markets of Vilnius, shoppers eagerly await the arrival of Kucinskas’ produce, knowing that they are supporting a family farm committed to the environment and the well-being of the community. With every purchase, they not only enjoy the taste of fresh, local produce, but also help preserve traditional farming practices and promote sustainable agriculture.

Irma and Egidijus Kucinskas personify the spirit of innovation and sustainable development in modern agriculture. Through their commitment to organic farming, crop diversification and the use of cutting-edge technology, they have created a thriving oasis of biodiversity in the heart of Utena. Their story serves as an inspiration to farmers around the world, demonstrating that by embracing tradition and innovation, we can create a more resilient and sustainable future for future generations.
