On January 19, 2025, Rumah Zakat launched a hydroponic melon farming empowerment program in Sekawening Village, Dramaga District, Bogor Regency. Initiated in November 2024, this program aims to enhance local farmers’ welfare by introducing modern agricultural practices, providing greenhouse infrastructure, and offering education on hydroponic techniques.
Program Implementation and Farmer Engagement
The program commenced with the sowing of 668 Inthanon melon seedlings, anticipated to be ready for harvest within 70 days. One of the participating farmers, Asgun, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, noting that it was his first experience with hydroponic melon cultivation. He highlighted the acquisition of new knowledge and the potential economic upliftment for farmers in Sukawening.
Hydroponic Melon Cultivation: A Growing Trend in Indonesia
Hydroponic melon farming is gaining traction in Indonesia due to its potential for high-quality yields and efficient resource utilization. A feasibility study conducted at PT. Agro Bergas Sejahtera in Semarang Regency demonstrated the financial viability of hydroponic melon cultivation. The study reported a Net Present Value (NPV) of IDR 637,561,973, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 37%, and a Payback Period of just over two years, indicating a promising return on investment.
Community and Youth Involvement
Similar initiatives have been implemented to engage communities and youth in modern agriculture. For instance, Dompet Dhuafa inaugurated the Madina Green House in Parung, Bogor, focusing on hydroponic melon cultivation. This program serves as a platform for young individuals to learn about agriculture, aiming to produce high-quality products that benefit local communities, especially those in need.
The hydroponic melon farming program by Rumah Zakat exemplifies a sustainable approach to modern agriculture, empowering local farmers through education and infrastructure support. Such initiatives not only enhance agricultural productivity but also contribute to economic development and community well-being.
