Recently, 75 ICT students from NOVA College in Haarlemmermeer had the opportunity to explore the cutting-edge innovations within the greenhouse industry during their visit to several greenhouse companies in Aalsmeer. This initiative, part of the CollegeTour organized by Glastuinbouw Nederland, Greenport Aalsmeer, AVAG, and VNO-NCW West, aims to bridge the gap between technical education and the horticultural sector, highlighting the crucial role of ICT in modern agriculture.
The Role of ICT in Greenhouse Farming
The students, from programs such as Smart IT, Software Development, and Infrastructure, visited Bunnik Bromelia, FM Group, and Aphrodite Orchidee. These tours provided a comprehensive look into how technology is integrated into greenhouse operations. From automated climate control systems to advanced data analytics for crop management, the students saw firsthand the technological advancements driving efficiency and sustainability in the sector.
Monique van Weerdenburg of Greenport Aalsmeer emphasized the importance of these excursions: “Many students from Hoofddorp had never been inside a greenhouse! Through CollegeTour, they discover how diverse working in horticulture is and what opportunities exist.”
Shifting Career Perspectives
The impact of the visit was profound. Before the tour, 88% of the students expressed no interest in pursuing a career in greenhouse farming. However, after witnessing the innovative applications of ICT within the industry, 51% of the students began considering internships or jobs in the sector. Demonstrations from IT suppliers such as IsoHorti Innovators and Hoogendoorn showcased real-world applications of their studies, making the sector more appealing.
This shift in perspective highlights the potential of targeted educational initiatives to attract new talent to the greenhouse industry. The hands-on experience allowed students to connect their technical skills with real-world applications, making the horticultural sector a viable and exciting career option.
The CollegeTour Initiative
The CollegeTour is a strategic initiative aimed at fostering interest in the greenhouse industry among technically skilled students. By exposing them to the innovative practices within greenhouses, the tour seeks to address the sector’s talent shortage. In June, these students will further their exposure by attending the international horticultural trade fair, GreenTech, in Amsterdam.
GreenTech is known for its focus on the latest technologies and innovations in horticulture, providing students with a broader view of the industry’s future. This experience will likely reinforce their newfound interest and potentially lead to increased participation in the sector.
The successful integration of ICT into greenhouse farming is not only transforming the industry but also attracting new talent. The NOVA College students’ visit to Aalsmeer’s greenhouses demonstrates the potential of educational tours to change perceptions and inspire future careers in horticulture. As the greenhouse industry continues to innovate, fostering such connections between education and agriculture will be crucial for its sustainable growth.
