Growing greenhouse vegetables is becoming unprofitable due to rising energy prices, Bavarian Radio reported on November 5.
The publication quotes vegetable growers Tanya and Andreas Evers, who said that they can no longer afford to pay gas bills to maintain the temperature in greenhouses from +20 to +22 degrees. In the north of Munich, the family grew tomatoes and cucumbers year-round in greenhouses on an area of 1.5 hectares. According to them, after the expiration of the gas contract at the end of the year, it will be too expensive to conclude the next contract.
Evers also noted that not only energy is becoming more expensive, but also seeds, seedlings, fertilizers, protective equipment, packaging materials and diesel fuel. According to them, customers have already begun to refuse spontaneous purchases of cocktail cherry tomatoes.
Vegetable growers see a way out in switching to growing less heat-loving crops, in particular, lettuce.
It should be noted that the German government announced on November 3 that large consumers will receive financial assistance starting from January 2023, but households, small and medium—sized entrepreneurs can count on assistance from February 2023.
Recall that in 2021 Germany consumed about 90 billion cubic meters of gas. The head of Gazprom, Alexey Miller, said on October 2 that there would be enough gas in Germany’s storage facilities for 2-2.5 months.
