According to the Spanish scientists, Ekonoke company, together with brewers, released the world’s first beer, which used only hops grown on a hydroponic farm.
Beer Respect! It was released in July 2022 in a limited series created as part of the collaboration of scientists with the Hijos de Rivera brewing company, the producer of Estrella Galicia beer. Ekonoke hops are completely eco-friendly. Usually, the hop harvest depends on the climate and the stability of the crop, but on a closed farm, scientists could control the conditions.
Thanks to this, they collect four times more raw materials and do without pesticides. Ana Saez Garcia, co-founder and CEO of Ekonoke, clarifies that all the closed hoppers owned by the company are equipped with special sensors.
If there is a failure in the greenhouse, the farm staff will immediately find out about it. In the town of Lampeter in Wales, a hydroponic farm called Dark Farm has been operating in an old warehouse building since 2017, where Gareth Davies grows 12 different varieties of hops.
In the USA, this method was used even earlier: Rough Brothers sold HopsHouse – hydroponic greenhouses that allow year-round cultivation of hops in any climate, harvesting from two to five times a year. The material was prepared by the Profibeer portal.
