The Municipal Authority of Palamas is in search of the best, and most appropriate, way to utilize the nursery, granted by the Ministry of Rural Development.
There are already discussions at an advanced stage, on a very interesting proposal with elements that integrate the modern agricultural economy and the protection of the Environment, through a model model of operation and management. The aim is to create positive effects on the development (social, economic and environmental) model of Thessaly and the Municipality of Palamas through vertically integrated food production based on modern units of the primary sector
Essentially, it is a Sustainable Center for Farming of the Primary Sector using a circular economy.
In the available areas of the nursery, agricultural, livestock and side farms will be developed that will include the principles and best practices of Sustainable Development and the Circular Economy using renewable energy sources, zero residue, zero pollutants and a positive Environmental footprint. The facilities that the proposal envisages to be created will have scientific staff to provide specialized support, automated electronic systems that will assist in the production process and its control, there will be complete recycling and reuse of water resources, while there will be energy autonomy. In the buildings of the facility, the development of agritourism and homecraft units will be planned that will utilize products produced by the unit or local producers.
In more detail:
• Livestock facilities (breeding of cattle for milk production and meat production, breeding of goats for milk production and meat production)
• Milk Management and Cheese Factories
• Agricultural facilities (three types of hydroponic greenhouses for tomato/pepper, greens, and strawberry production)
• Organic Animal Feed Production Unit (horticulture) with hydroponics
• Livestock waste treatment unit for the production of organic fertilizer
• Management systems with full recycling and reuse of resources (utilization of biowaste and agricultural waste for the production of organic fertilizers, purification and reuse of water, etc.)
• Center for Agritourism and Home Crafts
• All supporting (production and management of rations, standardization of products, warehouses, etc.)
The proposal being studied by the Municipality envisages the almost complete coverage of the creative costs by private funds and the establishment of a new special purpose company, with the participation of the Municipality of Palamas. It should also be noted that the facility will create 200-250 jobs during the construction period and 120-140 during the operation period, which will be filled with priority according to local criteria. As well as that there will be an educational center and an innovation center, where interested citizens will be able to be educated on issues of the primary sector, environmental, new technology, modern practices of intelligent agriculture and animal husbandry.
Great importance is also given to ensuring the framework and potential of the existing primary sector production units in the Municipality of Palamas, so that they not only continue their operation and develop further, but also can cooperate profitably and efficiently with the central facility . It is also worth mentioning the fact that for the planning there will be cooperation with the Agricultural University of Athens and the E.M.P.
The Municipal Authority of Palamas, headed by the mayor Mr. Giorgos Sakellariou, is thoroughly studying the proposal, wanting to ensure the maximum benefit for the Municipality and the Citizens. It is believed that a pioneering intervention in the nursery area can strengthen extroversion and stimulate the development perspective, strengthening the local economy in various ways.
The matter is expected to come before the Municipal Council soon, which will be called upon to take the decisions that will mark the next steps.
