Kazanorgsintez Develops New Polyethylene Grade for Drip Irrigation
In a significant development for the agricultural sector, Kazanorgsintez, a subsidiary of SIBUR, has introduced a new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) grade, HD 12443 AP, specifically designed for the production of drip irrigation tubes and tapes. This advancement was announced by Kazanorgsintez’s CEO, Ayrat Safin, during a public council meeting of the company, and it marks a pivotal response to the growing demands of Russian farmers.
- The Rise of Drip Irrigation in Russia:
Drip irrigation is gaining momentum across Russia, with the area of agricultural land using this method tripling over the past few years. Farmers favor drip irrigation for its ability to reduce water usage by 30-70% and fertilizer consumption by up to 50% compared to traditional sprinkler systems. The system delivers water directly to the root zone of plants in controlled amounts through drippers, ensuring optimal growth conditions.
- Efficiency and Yield Benefits:
The advantages of drip irrigation are substantial. It can increase crop yields by an average of 1.5 times and shorten the maturation period by 10-15 days compared to sprinkler irrigation. Unlike sprinklers, drip irrigation can water 100% of the field area, ensuring uniform crop quality. Additionally, it prevents flower damage, leaf burns, and minimizes weed growth.
In Tatarstan, drip irrigation is particularly effective for berry cultivation. Ildar Sitdikov, owner of the regional brand “Yagodnaya Dolina,” stated, “Fertilizers and drip irrigation have allowed us to increase yield tenfold. We now harvest about 30 tons of strawberries per hectare, compared to 3-4 tons without irrigation. Drip irrigation helps us conserve water and reduce field maintenance costs.”
- Supporting Domestic Production:
The introduction of the new HDPE grade by Kazanorgsintez supports the trend of import substitution. As demand for domestically produced drip irrigation systems rises, foreign-made tapes and tubes are gradually being replaced by Russian equivalents. Domestic products offer consistent quality, reliable supply, and competitive pricing.
Polymer pipe manufacturer “Techstroy” is preparing to test the new HDPE grade from Kazanorgsintez. “We have heard about this new grade and are ready to consider its application. Our factory began installing a drip irrigation line in May, and we expect our first batch of ‘Agrotech’ drip irrigation tubes by early summer. The new polyethylene grade is a significant advantage for manufacturers,” said a representative from the company.
- Future Developments and Market Impact:
Kazanorgsintez’s innovation is part of a broader initiative by SIBUR, which is currently exploring 73 new product projects slated for completion by 2027. The company’s product portfolio already includes over 250 specialized grades covering key sectors such as packaging, medicine, transport, pipelines, infrastructure, agriculture, consumer goods, housing and utilities, chemical industry, and oil and gas extraction.
The new HDPE grade developed by Kazanorgsintez represents a vital step forward in supporting the efficiency and sustainability of Russian agriculture. By addressing the needs of farmers and enhancing the quality and cost-effectiveness of drip irrigation systems, this innovation not only boosts agricultural productivity but also supports the broader trend of import substitution in Russia.
