More than 1.5 million tons of greenhouse vegetables were harvested in Russia for the winter period of 2022. This is 7% more than in 2021.
Investments in the greenhouse business have led to an increase in production volumes, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. According to the agency, in 2022, 7% of vegetables were harvested from winter greenhouses than in 2021 – for example, the harvest of cucumbers amounted to 850 thousand tons (+ 2.5%), and tomatoes – 620 thousand tons (+ 7%).
The leading regions (including the Lipetsk, Moscow and Belgorod regions) are actively building greenhouses equipped with modern microclimate systems. Due to these greenhouses, it is possible to increase the production of vegetables even in the cold season, but the construction of these greenhouses requires large financial investments. The greenhouse business is developing thanks to investments and state support.
Among the popular support programs that farmers resort to are soft investment loans and “stimulating” subsidies. In addition, there are special programs for the regions of the Far East. So here the issue of providing the population with fresh vegetables is acute, and without greenhouses it is impossible to provide the necessary volumes all year round, to stimulate the greenhouse business, the regional government compensates for the costs of building greenhouses. From 2022, farmers can receive payments of up to 20% of the cost of building and upgrading greenhouses in the Far Eastern Federal District.
Due to state support, the number of greenhouses in the Far Eastern Federal District is planned to be increased by 80 hectares by 2028, according to the Greenhouses of Russia Association. Due to this, the region will be provided with greenhouse vegetables by 70%. Now, even taking into account the construction of new facilities, the region provides itself with only 24% of vegetables. At the same time, association experts note that only compensation for construction costs is not enough for the rapid development of the greenhouse complex – farmers also need compensation for the logistics of equipment and materials, bank credit support and other measures.
Earlier, sfera.fm reported that the greenhouse business became the leader in the development and modernization of the agro-industrial complex. A global leap has occurred in the past few years, while experts note that over the years it has become impossible for small and medium-sized businesses to engage in greenhouses, since the construction of a greenhouse complex requires huge investments.
