The Fund for Social Initiatives of Gazprom has been granted permission to start the first phase of reconstruction of the old greenhouses in Tauride Garden, a historic cultural heritage site in St. Petersburg. The renovation project will focus on two small abandoned buildings with a total area of 700 square meters. Tauride Garden has been the home of the greenhouses since the late 18th century, but due to their deteriorating condition, the City of St. Petersburg has prohibited any new construction and only allowed for reconstruction.
In 2021, under a concession agreement, the City of St. Petersburg handed over the half-ruined 1970s greenhouses, which have been repeatedly renovated, to the Fund for Social Initiatives of Gazprom. The greenhouses cover an area of about 12,000 square meters on a plot of about 2.7 hectares. The agreement is valid for 49 years, and the facilities were transferred to the new user in the second half of 2021.
Located near the skating rink and the greenhouse, which Gazprom also purchased from private owners in 2021, the greenhouses are adjacent to the “Gardener’s House” business center. The renovation project plans to transform the space into a public area, but specific details have not yet been disclosed. The total cost of the project is estimated to be around 700 million rubles, and the new space is expected to be opened no later than July 2025.
The revitalization of historic greenhouses in Tauride Garden will be a significant contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage sites in St. Petersburg. The project will create a new public space for the residents of the city, promoting community engagement and providing opportunities for agriculture and horticulture. This initiative by Gazprom highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting sustainable development practices in the agricultural sector.
