Description: In the heart of Dagestan, a state-of-the-art greenhouse complex has recently been expanded to a whopping 5 hectares. This innovative facility is equipped with cutting-edge agricultural technologies, including misting systems, drip irrigation, and automated climate control. Join us as we explore the latest developments in Dagestan’s greenhouse industry and discover how it contributes to the region’s agricultural success.
The agricultural landscape in Dagestan is undergoing a remarkable transformation with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art greenhouse complex in the Kumtorkalinsky district. This expansion, which has increased the complex’s size fivefold to a remarkable 5 hectares, marks a significant milestone in the region’s agricultural development. First Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Dagestan, Sharip Sharipov, recently visited the complex to witness its cutting-edge technologies in action.
Modernization and Technological Advancements
The greenhouse complex boasts a range of modern engineering and technological systems that play a pivotal role in enhancing crop productivity. These systems include misting for humidity control, drip irrigation for efficient water distribution, and an automated climate control system. These innovations ensure an optimal microclimate within the greenhouse, resulting in bountiful harvests. Currently, half of the greenhouse area is dedicated to cultivating pink tomatoes, while the remaining half is reserved for cucumbers, both of which enjoy robust demand in the market.
According to official data, Dagestan ranks 7th in Russia in terms of greenhouse vegetable production volume. In 2022, the region produced an impressive 71,700 tons of greenhouse vegetables, making it the second-highest producer in the North Caucasus Federal District. A distinctive feature of Dagestan’s greenhouse industry is its specialization in tomato cultivation. Approximately 76% of the greenhouse vegetables produced in the region are tomatoes, compared to the national average of 47%.
The Rise of Pink Tomatoes
One standout success story in Dagestan’s greenhouse industry is the cultivation of pink tomatoes. These tomatoes are more challenging to grow but are in high demand in the market. As a result of mastering the cultivation techniques for this variety, Dagestan has become the fourth-largest producer of greenhouse tomatoes in the country.
Today, Dagestan boasts over 600 hectares of greenhouses, primarily located in private subsidiary farms. Leading the way in greenhouse cultivation are the Karabudakhkentsky, Kayakentsky, Derbentsky, and Kumtorkalinsky districts, as well as the suburbs of Makhachkala. It is heartening to note that modern agricultural technologies are finding their place in Dagestan’s greenhouse sector, and this particular complex stands out as one of the best in terms of technological capabilities and size within the Republic of Dagestan.
Future Growth and Investment Opportunities
Deputy Minister Sharipov emphasized that the region still has immense potential for growth in the greenhouse sector, with several investment projects in the pipeline. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Dagestan actively supports the selection of suitable land plots and assists in addressing other relevant issues.
In a nod to the significance of Dagestan’s role in the national agricultural landscape, Sharipov announced the upcoming opening of the largest all-Russian exhibition with international status, “DagAgro-2023.” This event, scheduled for October 11th in Kaspiysk at the Ali Aliyev Sports Complex, will bring together representatives of the greenhouse industry from various regions of Russia, organizations operating in this sector, scientists, experts, equipment suppliers, and seed producers. This annual event underscores Dagestan’s pivotal role in the development of greenhouse vegetable farming in the country.
Dagestan’s modern greenhouse complex is a testament to the region’s commitment to advancing agricultural technologies and ensuring a stable supply of high-quality vegetables to meet growing consumer demands. With a strong focus on tomato cultivation, especially the sought-after pink variety, Dagestan has established itself as a formidable player in Russia’s greenhouse vegetable production industry. The future looks promising, with continued growth and investment opportunities on the horizon, making Dagestan a key contributor to the nation’s agricultural success.
