Pham Ngoc Trong, a phone repairman turned urban farmer, has found success with an unconventional approach to agriculture. Intrigued by images of vertical hydroponics on the internet, Trong delved into the world of soilless farming. His goal was to provide fresh, organic vegetables for city dwellers with limited gardening space.

Starting the experiment in June 2023, Trong initially had concerns about Quang Binh’s climate suitability for hydroponics. However, after just three weeks, his kale thrived, leading to a successful harvest. Trong not only consumed the produce within his family but also shared it with neighbors, gaining significant local support.

Trong emphasizes the adaptability of hydroponics to urban living conditions, especially in cramped garden spaces. This method eliminates the need for soil, and automated systems handle irrigation and nutrient delivery, reducing labor-intensive tasks.

Currently, Trong sells his organic kale for 80,000 VND/kg, commanding a higher price due to its organic nature and superior quality. Despite the higher cost, his produce quickly sells out, showcasing the demand for locally grown, sustainable vegetables.

In addition to selling vegetables, Trong offers his hydroponic farming model, including machinery, technology, and technical guidance, at prices ranging from 7 to 10 million VND per unit. While the initial investment remains a significant hurdle for many, Trong actively promotes his model by hosting local tours, introducing visitors to the benefits and effectiveness of hydroponic farming.

Le Thi Huong, Chairwoman of the Farmers’ Association in Thuan Duc commune, envisions the widespread adoption of hydroponics in the region. She acknowledges the financial challenges for farmers but encourages exploration and support to expand this innovative farming method.

Pham Ngoc Trong’s journey from a phone repairman to a successful urban farmer exemplifies the potential of vertical hydroponics in revolutionizing urban agriculture. The combination of technological expertise and a commitment to sustainability opens doors for others to embrace this innovative farming model, making fresh, locally grown produce more accessible in urban areas.
