The Ministry of Agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis is taking bold strides to revolutionize the agricultural landscape in its pursuit of food security. Acknowledging the challenges posed by a hefty food import bill, currently standing at nearly $200 million, the government is actively investing in initiatives that empower local farmers and reduce dependency on external sources.
Greenhouse Villages, a visionary project outlined by Minister Samal Duggins, is set to transform the agricultural scene. The first phase of this initiative focuses on the construction of 15 state-of-the-art greenhouses in the Brothersons Estate region near Newton Ground. These high-tech structures will specialize in mass-producing priority crops, including peppers, tomatoes, leafy greens, broccoli, and cucumbers.
Minister Duggins emphasized the meticulous planning involved in the establishment of Greenhouse Villages. From the arrival of the ordered greenhouses to the ongoing land clearing and mapping process, every step is undertaken with precision. During his contribution to the 2024 Budget Debate, he highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to managing these villages with care.
The Greenhouse Village initiative not only provides farmers access to greenhouses at a fraction of the cost but also includes plans to revitalize existing greenhouses across the island. By the end of 2024, the Ministry aims to have over one hundred active greenhouses in the Federation, contributing significantly to local food production.
The economic impact is substantial. Minister Duggins envisions diverting a considerable portion of the $200 million food import bill directly to local producers and farmers, fostering economic growth within the Federation. This move aligns seamlessly with the government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda, emphasizing a holistic approach to agriculture that intertwines innovation, sustainability, and economic resilience.
The Ministry of Agriculture’s dedication to the Greenhouse Villages project signals a transformative era for agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis. By harnessing cutting-edge technology and prioritizing local production, the government aims to strengthen food security, empower farmers, and create a more sustainable agricultural model. The ripple effects are poised to be felt not only in economic terms but also in the resilience and self-sufficiency of the nation’s food supply.
