In 2023, the Tambov region witnessed a remarkable surge in the production of protected ground vegetables, marking a significant milestone in its agricultural journey. According to data released by the regional Ministry of Agriculture, vegetable production under protected cultivation soared by 134% compared to 2022. This surge reflects a concerted effort to bolster year-round food security and meet the evolving demands of the population.
During a meeting convened by the federal Ministry of Agriculture, Deputy Head of the Tambov Region and Minister of Agriculture, Alena Sytova, unveiled projections for further growth in 2024. Emphasizing the importance of diversified cultivation, discussions revolved around various crops including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, and herbs.
The momentum towards expansion is palpable, with forecasts indicating continued growth, particularly in the production of greenhouse tomatoes. Among the key players driving this momentum is the OOO “TK Michurinsky,” a leading enterprise renowned for its year-round vegetable cultivation. Currently operating two greenhouse complexes with plans for a third, the company is diversifying its portfolio with the introduction of tulip cultivation.
Beyond major enterprises, smaller-scale initiatives are also making waves in the region’s agricultural landscape. In the Nikiforovsky municipal district, the KFH of Mikhail Borodin stands out for its innovative approach to greenhouse cultivation. Supported by the “Agrostartup” grant, the farm produces a variety of vegetables including cucumbers, tomatoes, and bell peppers.
This surge in protected ground vegetable production not only signifies economic growth but also underscores the region’s commitment to sustainability and food security. By harnessing innovative cultivation techniques and embracing diversification, the Tambov region is paving the way for a resilient and thriving agricultural future.
