In Volyn Oblast, Ukraine, a new greenhouse enterprise is being established thanks to a state grant. The owner of “Volynsky Sad” farm, Taras Shcherblyuk, received UAH 3.5 million in grant funds for the construction of greenhouses, according to EastFruit, citing a Facebook post by Volyn Regional State Administration.
Since 2012, Volynsky Sad has specialized in horticulture, particularly growing apple and cherry trees. The decision to venture into greenhouse farming was spurred by the opportunity to receive government funding. Last year, Shcherblyuk applied through the “Diia” portal and secured the grant for building modular greenhouses. The project cost was covered 70% by the government and 30% by the farmer.
The project encompasses the construction of 11 greenhouses over an area of 0.8 hectares. One of these, a nursery greenhouse, is already operational, with the first cucumber seedlings planted in the enclosed soil. The first harvest is expected in early May. Adjacent to the farm, Shcherblyuk built a 1 MW solid-fuel boiler powered by straw pellets to maintain a consistent temperature in the greenhouses.
An important aspect of this project is its social impact, creating at least 12 additional jobs as per the grant conditions. Furthermore, the greenhouses will improve the year-round availability of locally produced fresh vegetables and greens for the region’s residents.
Since 2022, Ukraine has operated the “eRobota” government program, offering non-repayable grants for establishing orchards, vineyards, berry plantations, and greenhouses. In 2023, agricultural enterprises in Volyn attracted UAH 55.2 million in grant funds, resulting in the creation of 150 new jobs in the region.
