In the center of the village of Dmitrievka, Nikiforovsky municipal district, the greenhouse farm of Mikhail Borodin produced the first harvest of cucumbers of the year. This venture, supported by an AgroStartup grant, represents a promising venture in agricultural innovation. Having sowed the seeds back in February, Borodin carefully selected cucumber varieties that suit the tastes of consumers, both familiar and new. While the harvest is underway, Tambov residents look forward to the weekly market full of fresh produce from the farm.
In addition to cucumbers, this season Borodin’s farm is growing green onions, which complement the repertoire of tomatoes and bell peppers. Last year’s success was a major milestone for the farm, helped by government funding received in 2022 under the AgroStartup grant. Striving for excellence in his work, Borodin added to his experience by graduating from the Farm School, specializing in growing vegetables both in open ground and in greenhouses.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Tambov Region, the total production of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplants and greens in 2023 increased by 34 percent. In addition to small enterprises like Borodino, there are larger agricultural complexes in the region, such as TK Michurinsky and Teplichnoye.
Despite past achievements, the region’s greenhouse farms continue to move forward. Experts from the Ministry of Agriculture predict further growth in vegetable production this year due to the diversification of Tambov greenhouses by growing flowers.
The success story of the Nikiforovskoye greenhouse enterprise reflects the resilience and ingenuity of Tambov’s agricultural sector. Backed by grants and experience, farmers like Mikhail Borodin continue to enhance the region’s reputation for fresh, high-quality produce. With consumer demand growing and innovation flourishing, Tambov’s agricultural landscape is poised for a prosperous future.
