Vegetable exports from Morocco increased significantly and amounted to about $1.6 billion, up 12% from the previous year. Despite a 14% decline in fresh vegetable exports to 1.06 million tonnes due to adverse climate events, the figure still represents a 5% increase over the five-year average. Tomatoes remain the cornerstone of Morocco’s export earnings, approaching $1.2 billion in 2023, representing nearly three-quarters of the country’s total fresh vegetable export value. However, the sector faced serious problems due to high summer temperatures, which led to a decrease in exports of greenhouse tomatoes by 11% to 660 thousand tons. However, Morocco maintained its position as the world’s third largest exporter of fresh tomatoes, behind only Mexico and the Netherlands.
Sweet peppers retained the second position in export earnings in the vegetable sector, showing significant growth in export volumes. In 2023, exports of Moroccan sweet peppers increased by 4% to 174 thousand tons, and their monetary value increased by 55% to $230 million. Zucchini and pumpkin were among the top three fresh vegetable export categories by revenue, despite pumpkin’s modest share. Interestingly, zucchini exports have remained relatively stable each year in terms of quantity and value, with Morocco exporting 47 thousand tons in 2023, valued at $45 million.
