Farmers of Karelia use innovative developments to increase production volumes. So, in the farm of Ksenia Sosunkevich in the Shuya region this season, for the first time, a greenhouse with an area of one hectare started working at full capacity. This year, the greenhouse was completely covered with foil and 54,000 seedlings of early varieties of strawberries were planted.
According to Ksenia Sosunkevich, when developing a greenhouse in the UK, a technology was used that will help increase yields.
“This is an interesting technology for our northern regions,” the farmer said. “Due to the fact that it protects from winds and frosts, we increase yields and reduce risks. Last year we used it, but so far we have not reached full yield, because we were supplied with low-quality planting material, we had to re-plant the greenhouse. This year we should reach the maximum harvest. I expect to get around 15 tons per hectare.”
The English greenhouse in Shuya will give farmer Sosunkevich a third of all strawberries, despite the fact that it occupies only one hectare, and the area of all other plantings this year will be five hectares. There is only one such greenhouse in Karelia. The farm was able to acquire it, among other things, thanks to the support of the Government of Karelia. With the cost of the greenhouse at 7 million rubles, the authorities of the republic returned three million rubles in the form of subsidies.
