Over the past three years, the 360 High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative in Gia Lai Province, Vietnam, has adopted greenhouse cultivation for passion fruit, yielding significant benefits. This approach has led to increased productivity and the ability to harvest throughout the year, presenting a sustainable model for passion fruit farming.
Organic Cultivation Practices
The cooperative initiated organic greenhouse cultivation of passion fruit in Ia Kênh, Pleiku City. Director Lê Thị Bảo Trâm highlighted that traditional cultivation methods previously resulted in unstable market access. By investing in greenhouse technology, the cooperative aimed to stabilize production and meet market demands. The initial investment for greenhouse infrastructure ranges from approximately 250 to 400 million VND per 500 square meters. Despite the high initial costs, the cooperative recognized the economic potential of passion fruit, given its export value.
The cooperative dedicated nearly two years to soil improvement before planting, ensuring optimal growth conditions. Greenhouse cultivation offers advantages such as controlled temperature and humidity, reduced pest infestations, and simplified monitoring, leading to increased yield and product quality. Notably, greenhouse-grown passion fruit can be harvested year-round, with each planting cycle extending close to two years before replanting is necessary.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
Greenhouse cultivation of passion fruit offers both economic and environmental advantages. The controlled environment reduces the need for chemical pesticides, promoting organic farming practices. Additionally, the ability to produce high yields on smaller land areas contributes to more efficient land use, aligning with sustainable agriculture goals.
The implementation of greenhouse cultivation for passion fruit by the 360 High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative demonstrates the potential for sustainable and profitable farming practices. This model not only enhances yield and product quality but also supports environmental sustainability and opens avenues for export opportunities.
