In preparation for the warmer months, the Tambov greenhouse has sown 85,000 seeds of the ever-blooming begonia. The chosen varieties—“Ambassador,” “Bada Bing,” and “Senator”—are known for their vibrant pink, red, and white flowers, complemented by lush green or red foliage.
According to Nadezhda Novikova, Chief Agronomist at the Directorate of Improvement and Landscaping, begonias are the first choice because of their long vegetative growth period. “In two to three weeks, the first transplant will occur. Tiny seedlings will be moved to larger growing spaces. A second transplant will follow, where stronger seedlings will be placed into trays,” she explained.
A Detailed Cultivation Plan
The begonia planting marks the beginning of an extensive greenhouse operation aimed at transforming Tambov’s public spaces. Following the begonia, the team will shift its focus to perennials such as phlox, gaillardia, caspia, and fescue. These plants are widely used in urban landscaping for their resilience and aesthetic appeal.
The greenhouse will also prepare for vertical gardening by cultivating approximately 1.5 million petunias, which account for half of the annual and perennial plants planned for the season. These petunias will play a significant role in creating striking vertical displays throughout the city.
Importance of Urban Greenery
Urban landscaping contributes significantly to environmental and social well-being. Research has shown that green spaces improve air quality, reduce heat islands in cities, and provide psychological benefits to residents. The inclusion of colorful and resilient plants like begonias and petunias ensures both ecological and aesthetic enhancements.
Challenges and Innovations
Managing such a large-scale operation comes with its challenges. Ensuring optimal growing conditions for a wide variety of plants requires precise control of temperature, humidity, and nutrient supply. Innovations in greenhouse management, such as automated watering and climate control systems, are helping the Tambov greenhouse achieve consistent results.
The ambitious efforts of Tambov’s greenhouse staff are not just about planting seeds but about sowing the foundations of a greener, more vibrant city. By carefully selecting and nurturing a variety of plants, they aim to enhance the city’s visual appeal while promoting sustainable urban development. With 85,000 begonias leading the way, Tambov is set to bloom spectacularly this spring and summer.
