In a decade, Almeria’s tomato exports decreased by 23.5% and Moroccan exports increased by 41.84%.
Hortoinfo has carried out a study on the exports of tomatoes from Almeria and Morocco between 2012 and 2021 which analyzes the increase in Moroccan tomato exports and the gradual decrease in tomato exports from Almeria over the last decade.
In 2012, Almeria exported 503.43 million kilos of tomatoes and Morocco exported 443.81 million kilos. In 2013, a year later, the province increased its export volumes to 558.9 million kilos, seeing a notable rebound in shipments.
Almeria continued to export more than Morocco until 2016, when it traded 538.11 million kilos and Morocco, which had already shown a significant increase in traded volumes, exported 524.91 million kilos.
The balance changed in 2017 when Almeria exported 473.98 million kilos of tomatoes and Morocco exceeded that amount, increasing its shipments to 527.72 million kilos. Since then, the difference has only increased until 2021, the last year analyzed, when Morocco exported 629.51 million kilos of tomatoes and Almeria 385.09 million kilos.
In total, from 2012 to 2021, Almeria’s tomato exports decreased by 23.5% while Moroccan tomato exports increased by 41.84%.
