At Schneiders Obsthof in Wachtberg, Katharina Quast and her team are diligently preparing for the upcoming harvest. Although tunneled strawberries provide some protection from adverse weather conditions, vigilance is still required to protect the delicate fruit. From the use of fleece coverings to the regulation of temperature and humidity levels in the tunnels, every precaution is taken to ensure optimal growing conditions.

The region’s strawberry growing landscape boasts a variety of growing methods, ranging from traditional ground cultivation to innovative racking systems housed in tunnels. Each approach offers unique benefits, from faster harvest times to increased labor efficiency, reflecting the adaptability and ingenuity of local producers.

Despite the uncertainty caused by changing weather conditions, farmers like Michael Häger from Obsthof Häger remain optimistic about the upcoming season. Using strategic growing practices and a commitment to quality, Häger strives to supply customers with locally grown strawberries from April to October, highlighting the sustainability and resilience of regional agriculture.

In her speech at the season’s opening ceremony, Agriculture Minister Silke Gorissen praised the vital role of local fruit producers in advancing climate protection efforts and promoting sustainable food systems. With a focus on shorter supply chains and premium quality products, the region’s strawberry industry continues to thrive, serving as a beacon of innovation and sustainability in an ever-changing agricultural landscape.

As the strawberry season unfolds in Bonn and the surrounding area, farmers are coping with many challenges while hoping for a fruitful harvest. From adapting to unpredictable weather conditions to using innovative growing methods, their resilience and dedication highlight the enduring spirit of agriculture in the region. As consumers, we can show our support by using locally grown produce and recognizing the invaluable contributions of those who work tirelessly to bring nature’s bounty to our tables.
