In the past year, Turkey has witnessed a remarkable surge in tomato production, recording a substantial 42.8% increase compared to the figures from 2022, as reported by the Association of Consumers from Southeast Anatolia. The total production now stands at an impressive 588,418 tons, indicating a significant contribution to the nation’s economy.
However, the number of clients for Turkish tomatoes has slightly decreased. While there were 54 countries worldwide purchasing Turkish tomatoes in 2022, the number has reduced to 52 in 2023, according to reports by zerno.bg. Notably, Russia remains the largest client for Turkish tomatoes, contributing a substantial 91.98 million dollars, followed by Ukraine with 64.6 million dollars, Poland with 56.65 million dollars, and Germany with 53.98 million dollars.
“The increase in tomato exports from Turkey to 538.72 million dollars in 2023 is positive both for our producers and consumers, contributing to the country’s economy. Expanding foreign markets will stimulate entrepreneurs to invest in new greenhouses, and increased investments will aid in boosting employment and the overall national economy,” stated the Chairman of the Turkish Association of Investors and Producers of Greenhouse Vegetables, Halil Pekdemir.
With the ambition to become the leading producer of greenhouse vegetables in Europe, Turkey’s tomato industry aims to foster economic growth through expanded exports, new investments in greenhouses, and increased employment opportunities.
Turkey’s remarkable increase in tomato production signifies not only economic prosperity but also the potential for further growth in the greenhouse vegetable industry. Despite a slight decrease in the number of clients, the positive impact on the economy is evident, emphasizing the country’s role as a significant player in the global market.
